For God and Glory: Lord Nelson and His Way of War
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (May, 2003)
Author: Joel S. A. Hayward
Average review score:

An Instant Classic!! SIMPLY THE BEST RECENT BOOK ON NELSON
This book is an instant classic! Nelson books appear almost every year, as do Napoleon books, but few of them say anything new. This book is the most original book on the world's most famous admiral to appear since, gosh, maybe the second world war.

Who has ever before analysed such themes as the impact of spirituality or religion on Nelson's war-making? Who has ever asked whether Nelson actually fought well when ashore? Who has asked whether Nelson made an effective coalition partner or leader? Who has, in recent decades anyway, asked whether Nelson is still RELEVANT to today's navies?

Joel Hayward has answered these and many other unique questions, and has written his book with such mastery of English that his eloquence and elegance make the book a genuine pleasure to read.

I know nothing about the author but I intend to see what else he has written and I'll buy it. He is a powerfully original thinker and has written the best and most analytical military book I have read aside from the masterly John Keegan himself.

This book has my highest recommendation, and then some!!

FINALLY: A book on Lord Nelson that says something NEW!!!
Students of Napoleonic warfare have always known that the study of Horatio Lord Nelson's life is a stimulating activity. Nelson was a true genius of war, and mainly because, as this book shows, he was an eccentric and very unorthodox character.

But the scarcity of insightful, informed and UP-TO-DATE analyses of his naval strategies, tactics, leadership, command and management has been very frustrating for those of us who believe that Nelson still has RELEVANCE for TODAY'S warriors.

A ceaseless flow of books essentially narrating Nelson's life without thorough analysis has become boring and adds to our frustrations.

Dr Hayward is the first to address our frustrations, and his book does so splendidly.

Hayward demonstrates through a highly unusual, interesting and effective thematic approach that Nelson rivals Napoleon as their era's "greatest champion" and that, even though sea warfare has changed considerably, a study of Nelson's art of war will teach, challenge, enrich and impress today's naval warriors and all other armed forces personnel.

Like in Hayward's ground-breaking STOPPED AT STALINGRAD, the author asks new questions and often presents highly original answers. Even if a few other Nelson experts will disagree with some conclusions, all will be stimulated to dig deeper themselves as a response to this brilliant and long-overdue book.

The author doesn't disparage the works of other Nelson scholars and writers. On the contrary, he acknowledges openly that his book is an attempt to repay the intellectual debt he owes them. He's gracious and not at all dogmatic even when pointing out where another scholar has apparently erred.

The writing is terrific. It is reflective, engaging, informative and fluent. I read each chapter (effectively separate but related, cutting-edge essays) in single sitting.

The book is also very attractive, with fine maps and illustrations.

If you want to read something new and original about naval warfare's greatest admiral, FOR GOD AND GLORY cannot be (NO! MUST NOT BE) overlooked. It is a lovely book and a great step forward in terms of what we know about Lord Nelson as a warrior.

Best new book on Nelson in years. Original too.
I loved this book, even though nearly everything in it was new to me and I had to read it slowly to take it all in. Its about time a military expert explained to those of us who devour books on Nelson just how good, and why, Nelson was. Even today's military officers will find great relevance in the way Nelson approached war, says the author, and I agree. I'm buying this book for my nephew, a destroyer officer, because I think he'll get enormous value from Hayward's treatment of Nelson's leadership and command practices. If my nephew realises what Nelson did, that it's better to focus on those below you than those above you, he'll be a successful officer and make his subordinates work willingly for him.

Hayward's coverage of Nelson's abilities is balanced. While Hayward can't hide the fact that he admires him, and doesn't try to hide it, he points out carefully and in a fair way how weak Nelson was in some areas and why these weaknesses caused errors and disasters.

Hayward's approach is to write inter-related chapters that are essentially essays. He doesn't narrate in a chronological fashion like nearly every other writer on Nelson does. He critiques and analyses things, with an expertise in military matters that we haven't seen in Nelson books in recent years.

I applaud this book, which is attractive and has great maps, beautifull illustrations and a handy index.

A Guide for the Advanced Soul

A little "guide" that WORKS (if you let it)
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! About 11 years ago a series of events took place that left me emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically drained. I literally felt like things were hopeless. Then I got the paperback version of this book...and I mean it when I say it helped change my daily life.

I followed the author's suggestions (I was willing to try anything): I held the book in my two hands, held the problem or dilemma in my mind, meditated a bit on it, let my mind (and body) be still...then closed my eyes, made my request in a question form...and opened the book. I would always open it and only look at the page that I "felt" I was being led to by one of my fingers.

Most of the time I was amazed: the quotation on the page TRULY referred to my problem and gave me some insight. And I (more often than not) acted on it. Once in a while I'd get an answer that didn't seem like an answer, so I'd reframe the question and start the process again.

Years later I gifted this book to someone in trouble. And I truly missed not having it. Then, last month, I bought it AGAIN...this time in hardcover.

I STRONGLY recommend this book. Even if you read it from cover to cover (which is not really how it is designed to be used) you'd gain a wealth of insight, since the quotations -- from yogis, to Eileen Cassidy, to the Bible, to Walt Whitman -- are the BEST to help steer your thinking (and some say guide your intuition) towards helpful, often healing solutions.

This is a small but potent book. Great to read. Great to use as a little voice that will answer your questions as you randomly turn to a page after a bit of meditation. And, most of all, GREAT to GIFT to friends, family or someone who's facing some difficult challenges. Once you use this book you'll never want to be without it.

A Guide Only for the Fearless
Ms. Hayward's book has been a part of my life for more than 15 years. I recently purchased the updated version for a friend of mine. To achieve the best that this book offers, one must truly let go to the insight & experience that its text provides. If you are prepared to let go a little, and to learn even a little more, you will appreciate the peace you can receive from this volume.

Best wishes to you all...

A must-have!
This collection of inspiration and angelic guidance has borne a permanent home on both my heart and my bedside table! Filled with the wisdom, knowledge and comforting quotes from some of the world's most intelligent and 'advanced souls', this book, bearing a unique and profound type of energy, is a ray of sunlight on any cloudy day. I have turned to its pages in every mood imaginable and it has never failed to provide clarity, guidance, consolation and peace.

Flowers: The Book of Floral Design
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Malcolm Hillier and Stephen Hayward
Average review score:

Difficult to top!
This book is tops! I am trying to find another book on flower arranging as a gift for my mother-in-law who loves the subject, but I keep coming back to this one. Creativly inspired and visually stunning, just browsing through it is amazing.

Just Great Book
This book is just great. If you love flowers, I think you will absolutely love this book. The pictures are remarkable. Just buy!

Flower Fantasy
Malcolm Hillier is an acclaimed flower stylist who combines his passion for flowers with elegant design. I have never seen such a lavishly illustrated book on flower arranging. Over 2,000 photographs will inspire you to arrange your own flowers.

There are hundreds of ideas for using fresh and dried flowers. The step-by-step sequences make the techniques clear and simple. When you start arranging flowers, you quickly find out you need an "essential kit" in order to complete even a basic flower arrangement. This is where "Practical Techniques" comes into play.

You will want to buy a glue gun, floral wires, pruning knife, florist's scissors, etc. All the essential supplies are listed with pictures. This book is filled with pictures! The first chapter discusses Flowers In Civilization and shows flowers in history and art.

Elements of Design is a visual guide to flower colors and the pages are filled with piles of wonderful petals in every color. I loved the Container Shapes section. There are two sections, with one further into the book.

This book is SO INCREDIBLE! .....Shall I continue..?

Then, we get to Inspiration. You will find page after page after page of mini-floral displays with the page number so you can learn how to make the arrangement with precise instructions. There are arrangements in this book you would not even imagine in your wildest floral dreams.

For instance, on page 96 there is an underwater floral arrangement. There are upside down glasses, with flowers in them, floating in the water and facing outwards in a huge vase. Then, OH MY..I happen upon page 212 and there is a hanging upside down Christmas Tree dangling dangerously from the ceiling. I am not sure I approve! Decorating the tree looked a bit dangerous, but it sure was creative.

A Floral Ice Bowl on page 248 is one of my favorite ideas as the flowers are suspended in their original beauty in ice. Then, in the summer...how about a "watermelon vase?" The Floral Place Setting is a way to beautifully decorate each place setting is a wonderful summer idea or dried herbs could be used in the winter. The mini-christmas trees are an idea even children could help make.

An A-Z plant guide is a huge section. This visual guide will introduce you to just about every flower you would ever want to use in an arrangement. Some useful addresses complete with Web site addresses gives you even more information. An easy-to-use Index helps you locate your favorite flowers.

If you want inspiration and information, this is the book for you!

A Telling Time
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica (January, 2003)
Author: Glynnis Hayward
Average review score:

Thriller
A thriller and historical, - this was a page turner. A very interesting expose of South Africa during apartheid.

Captivating reading
Once I had started reading A Telling Time by Glynnis Hayward, I could not put the book down. The story line is gripping: it not only made me much more aware of South Africa during the 1970's and how brutal the police system was for opponents of the government, it questioned the horror that humans can inflict on each other. The lessons learned from the story apply much more broadly than apartheid South Africa. The book helped me understand vividly how undemocratic regimes with security apparatus that has no limit to its power can exercise control and terror over its citizens. It did so with chilling descriptions of torture, brutality and deception yet kept me hooked with the courage of people who defied the system at great personal cost. This is a must read

Authentic
From the first to last page I was involved at a deeply emotional level. The characters and story authentic and real; I could not put the book down. A well crafted and beautifully written story of life as it was in SA in the '70s - I know, I was there!

Letters to Vanessa: On Love, Science and Awareness in an Enchanted World
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (September, 1997)
Authors: Jeremy W. Hayward and Vanessa Hayward
Average review score:

Great letters even if you are not a teen.
Although written in the form of letters from a father to his daughter, this book is a great read for anyone interested in modern physics, neuroscience, and biology and their relationship to spirituality. If the "Dear Vanessa" is removed from the beginning of each chapter the letters take on a universal audience. By writing as if to a teenage daughter, the explanations of advanced scientific concepts and mindfulness practices become accessible to the general reader. Hayward re-enchants our world by showing how something he calls awareness-feeling-energy fills all of space. He shows how changing the way we think about the world can allow us to see the universe as alive and full of awareness. Three of the chapters in the book are what Hayward calls Interludes where he describes meditation practices derived from Buddhism that are aimed at helping the reader make the concepts described intellectually become integrated into consciousness. The bibliography is divided into chapters so the reader can pursue any concept discussed as far as desired. A great book for anyone interested in the topic.

Awesome material at a perfect time....
While in Atlanta, I happened upon this book. I threw it in a pile and sat down to sip coffee and find somethng to read in my dead time. I glanced through my titles and nothing "grabbed" me. Just then my beeper went off and dead time became live time as I had to get to work for a client...Upon returning to the NY area, I searched for this book just to finish my perusal. After about a two week search i found it. And when I sat down with a cup of coffee this time, I could not believe the information in this book. It is so well put together that the word Vanessa could have easily been replaced by my name! The book is a must read and is just gaining popularity in some circles. I absolutely love this material. In fact I have purchased 16 copies to give as gifts to freinds and relatives! Pick it up! You won't put it down!

Making the Spirit, Matter . . .
In a series of letters written to his daughter, Vanessa, the author allows the reader to "live within his dream." His own invisible love, a spiritual concept, is vividly explained through the physics of how energy becomes Matter, and all Matter is Energy. From pre-Tibetan Buddhism to current and future theories on the "nature" of quanta, the scientist meets the mystic in language the layman can understand. Since our reality is based on our beliefs and our beliefs are based on our perceptions and our perceptions, in turn, make up what we think - What we "think" to be belief-able makes up what we take to be true and this becomes reality. BUT FAITH is a substance, a belief system born in Trust. Mark Twain said, "Faith is believing when you know it ain't true." Like love, trust is invisible but can be understood to exist as energy in the pages of this book. "Trust me, you'll like it," is an old Sales cliche BUT, If you Trust me, you WILL like it - because you've invested the Energy to believe. Keep Smilin', Mike

Sea Kayaking: A Woman's Guide
Published in Paperback by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (01 May, 1998)
Authors: Shelley Johnson, Molly Mulhern Gross, and Doug Hayward
Average review score:

Excellent Resource
We're all out on the water. Excellent source of information with a target audience.

Lots of kayaking info for all!
I had been looking for an informative book that covered the many aspects of kayaking when I found this book while on a kayaking/camping trip in Maine. The book caught my eye, because it said it was a woman's guide to sea kayaking. However, it is much more than just a "woman's guide". As the others have said, all kayakers will benefit from reading this book. It is an interesting and easy-to-understand guide with lots of descriptive photos and drawings. It covers a wide range of topics such as:getting to know your kayak & paddle, safety and emergency info, carrying and transporting your kayak, weather and navigation, and much more! I would recommend this book to any person interested in learning more about kayaking!

For anyone interested in sea kayaking
I'm a male who bought this book to help introduce a girlfriend to seakayaking. Without a doubt it's the best all around introduction to the sport I've read. Great advice on finding a boat and basic technique. I recomend it for either men or women who are interested in getting started.

Now That You Know: What Every Parent Should Know about Homosexuality
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (January, 1979)
Authors: Betty Fairchild and Nancy Hayward
Average review score:

Excellent book for families dealing with the issues of gay c
I bought this book when I was thinking of coming out to my parents. Although they never read it, I did. I learned more about the issues of being gay and how to deal with them by reading this book than from any other source. It helped me to understand my parents' fear and anxiety, and helped me to accept myself in a very positive way that has lasted a lifetime.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, gay or straight, who desires to learn the facts about homosexuality, and how real people can deal with its unique problems in a positive way.

Excellent book for gay men and women and their families.
I did a search for this title specifically so I could submit a review. That's how good I think it is. I read a previous release of this book when I was "outed" to my family accidentally in 1980. The book described to me the feelings of some parents, the possibility of rejection, but especially the love and acceptance that can be experienced by gays when they reveal their whole selves. This book can bring comfort to family members who are dealing with coming-out issues. I thank and applaud the authors whole-heartedly!

Heartwarming, Inspiring, Informative, Encompassing!

I didn't know a book on this subject could be as enlightening, inspiring, and informative all at the same time. Truly insightful in delivering and uncovering of the "Homosexual" dilemna of children who at some point in their lives have decided to face the consequences of telling their parents who they really are.

This book focuses on uncovering the heartaches, fear, rejection, love of parents and at the same time confusion and self-doubt faced by most parents of homosexual children. This book provides personal glimpses and sheds some light on parent's fears that they are somehow responsible for who their children have become regarding their sexuality and focuses more on accepting and loving their child for the whole person that they have become instead of hating them or rejecting them for that one aspect of their life.

The Sesame Street Dictionary: Featuring Jim Henson's Muppets
Published in Hardcover by Random House (Merchandising) (October, 1980)
Authors: Linda Hayward, Ellington Duke, and Sesame Street
Average review score:

EXCELLENT
My 2.5 years old son falls in love with this book. He reads it every night. Every night, he will take out this book from the shelf and asks me to tell what the sesame street muppet did in the pages. Once I stop, he will say : "Turn the page, Mum, No stop. Please read me this book!" If you don't ask him to stop reading, he will continue to read this book till late night. This book is really a unusal dictionary that the family with little child should have one.

Sorry it's out of print!
This book is not just for toddlers. It is the only dictionary I have seen that puts standard sight words into meaning. Particulary children with learning disabilities have a very difficult time understand the concept of sight words. With a very playful, visual and active descriptive of the sight words, it brings life to the meaning of the words, and it eases in the retention of these words when reading. This book is excellent for children with reading disabilities - up until the 3rd or 4th grade.

An excellent book to grow up with
This book is wonderful for children from ages 2 and up. My 2 year old is not yet ready to learn definitions, but the book is filled with colorful, easy to see pictures, in which he can identify his beloved Sesame Street characters, as well as the activities that they portray. This is one of the few books that he doesn't want to put down. So many pages makes it something new each and every time we pick it up. I cannot tell you the extent of the knowledge he has gained from this book. Several of his daycare teachers have told me how amazing he is in what he knows and comprehends for a child his age. His knowledge and perception of things took off immediately following our Sesame Street Dictionary reading sessions. This is a book that will continue to give as he grows older and begins learning the concepts and definitions of these words, not to mention when he begins reading and writing!

Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East, 1942-1943 (Modern War Studies(Paper))
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Kansas (September, 2001)
Author: Joel S. A. Hayward
Average review score:

An excellent and compelling study
This book is mandatory reading to anyone interested in the Wehrmacht's campaigns on the Eastern Front. The study has been meticulously researched, is reflective, well written, and evidence that the author is one of the foremost experts of German military operations against the Soviet Union during 1942. The book is a scholarly, detailed study of the Luftwaffe's campaigns during this critical year, yet provides perfect analytical context by explaining army operations, which the Luftwaffe was closely affiliated and therefore necessary for understanding its own activities, and also the strategic/political factors driving the Wehrmacht's overall campaign. It also demonstrates, to often overlooked in most campaign studies, the significant role that individual personalities can, and do, play in war. This book is a MUST read to anyone that is especially interested in the Luftwaffe, joint warfare, dynamic leadership and airpower. All military practitioners, scholars and commentators will thoroughly enjoy reading it.

A must-have for everyone interested in the Stalingrad Battle
Recently I ordered 'Stopped at Stalingrad' from amazon.com. It was well worth the puchase, as the book is both a profoundly researched study and an interesting read. It's a scholarly work which, undoubtedly, will become a classic in its field.

Dénes Bernád, Aviation Historian and Author

a harshly critical book about the Luftwaffe
Hayward believes that German air doctrine was too narrowly focused on tactical air support and ignored strategic targets. In his book, Hayward supports his thesis by stating that during the battle for Stalingrad, the Luftwaffe paid too much attention to supporting the ground forces and not enough attention to interdicting the ferries carrying Russian soldiers across the Volga river. Hayward also criticizes the Luftwaffe for not bombing the Caucasusian oil fields which could have severely hampered the Russian war effort. Finally, Hayward writes that the Luftwaffe was spread out to thinly to support the main thrust at Stalingrad and Manstein's southern advance in the Caucasus. I would strongly reccomend this book to anyone whose interested in the faults of German military doctine during World War II.

The Bedbug and Selected Poetry
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (October, 1975)
Authors: Vladimir Mayakovsky, Patricia Blake, and Max Hayward
Average review score:

great epics
Mayakovsky was one of the foremost futurist poets of the early 20th centuary. He wrote anguished (and mildly egocentric) pieces about being alone and unrequited in love. He also wrote political poems that were supposed to moblize the workers and shock the borgeosie establishment. This book is worth buying for the two epics "A cloud in trousers" and "The backbone flute" alone. The other poems are the icing on the cake, sounding off his thundering poetic voice. His final poem, "Past one o'clock.." starkly contrasts the others with it's muted depression. He would include part of it in his suicide note, changing the line "now you and I are quits" to "now life and I are quits." The Bedbug is a savage satire of Soviet society, and (had he not shot himself) would probably have gotten him arrested during the imminent Stalinist purges. After his death, Mayakovsky was lauded by Stalin. His pro-Bolshevik political verses were glorified and proudly shown off by the state, whilst his other poems and satirical plays were quietly supressed. Get this book if you want to see every side of Mayakovsky, and not just the one that has been publicized for years as propaganda.

THE VOICE OF REVOLUTION.
His verses are curses,
His words are sharp swords,
His phrases are races
Of animal herds,
He slashes and bashes,
He kicks and he bites,
The world of the uselessness,
Bleeds and than dies.

Good if you dig Russian lit.
Well, I love pre-Revolution Russian literature, so I guess I'm a little biased towards this book, but it really is good. Even the introduction is fascinating and inspiring if you ask me.
